I first stumbled across Michael's work by way of an online PD video summit about a year and a half ago. With all the bells and whistles of a "game-based" approach to classroom instruction, it's hard not to be blown away by the creativity he brings to our craft. But what struck me the most about what he had to say was just how firmly grounded it was in a human-centered design built on a framework of sound educational research. His content was accessible, easy to implement, and backed up by a ton of student-centered pedagogy. As a classroom teacher and school instructional coach, I've long had to develop a sort of Spidey Sense to help distinguish the contenders from the conmen. But I walked away from Michael’s presentation feeling energized and full of (quite literally) DOZENS of ideas ready to roll for my own classroom -- so I quickly fired up my iPhone and download a copy of his book.Did. Not. Disappoint. Two weeks later and I had radically overhauled my entire approach to what was already (I thought!) a pretty respectable student-centered approach to teaching in my own classroom. Eighteen months later and I'm a published author with a book of my own, due in no small part to the galvanizing efforts of Matera's eXPlore Like a Pirate and the fantastic support of his continued efforts to foster a collaborative, creative think tank of gamified classroom educators across the country. This review is long overdue, and I'm honored to write it to pay it forward to the next cohort of educators looking to change the game in their schools. If you're new to game-inspired education, this book is a step-by-step playbook to help walk you through every step along your journey. And if you're already playing around with a more experimental approach to education (think Montessori meets Legend of Zelda!) -- this is exactly the resource you've been looking for to "Level Up" your classroom to a truly unforgettable realm of discovery, exploration, and wonder.Simply can't say enough great things about eXPlore Like a Pirate. The book is a goldmine of inspiration for educators of any age or grade level, and Matera is every bit the genuine article of teacher authors. His passion is palpable, and his book is a treasure. I thought that this book would show me how to gamify my course, but it didn’t. What it does do is show you really well what the elements of gaming are. The actual integration of the gaming elements with course content is really, really sparse. I couldn’t figure out how to fuse the gaming elements with the course content. While there are a few quick examples in the book, there is not even one full unit or even lesson plan outlined. Therefore, I read the whole book, but am still confused about how to gamify my class. I really wish there were more pictures and details throughout. Even an internet link to a fully fleshed out unit plan that thoroughly explains how this author combines gaming with course content would be more informative than this book. I also found the pirate language used throughout to be very annoying.Update: Okay. I watched some videos of the author online and I have a better, but still sort of unclear idea about how the game fits with the course. It seems the game runs alongside course content and when grades aren’t attached to an activity, teachers can attach gaming rewards to it. I still think the author should provide a DETAILED, day-by-day breakdown of what his class looks like for a month or so.
